Reflexology FAQs

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is one of many holistic complementary therapies. It is based on the belief that all the organs and structures of the body are reflected on the soles and top of the feet.

Reflexology can also be performed on hands. However, it is generally considered that feet are more sensitive and thus more receptive to treatment.

Reflexology should be performed by a trained therapist who uses only their hands to locate areas of imbalance in the body by detecting tiny deposits under the skin which are thought to be an accumulation of uric acid. The therapist works on these areas to break down the deposits and help restore balance in the corresponding part of the body.

How does it work?

Reflexology has not yet been scientifically proved and this is quite a stumbling block to many people who cannot accept that 'a simple foot massage' can help achieve optimal health.

Perhaps one of the main reasons for reflexology's efficacy is that it simply and effectively aids relaxation.

We all live with a level of stress in our lives which only becomes a problem when we can't manage it. This results in the body's defence system breaking down which is when we become susceptible to illness.

By inducing relaxation, one's breathing becomes deeper, slower, and the body's circulatory system benefits from this as the movement of blood works at its peak to transport nutrients to tissues and excrete metabolic waste, and so maintains the body's balance.

What should I expect when I go for a treatment?

A treatment usually lasts between 45 minutes to an hour. However, a first treatment may take around an hour and a half to include a preliminary talk with the therapist regarding your medical history and also general information about yourself, e.g your employment, diet, lifestyle etc.

You will then be asked to remove your footwear and make yourself comfortable on a couch. At this point, some people may feel quite shy and possibly embarrassed about exposing a part of their body that rarely sees the sun. Do try to relax; like a doctor, the reflexologist will have seen it all before!

Once you are comfortable, the treatment will commence with a short opening routine on both feet before the main treatment, and will finish off with a light relaxing massage.

Will it hurt?

Pain is certainly not the intention of reflexology. However, clients may find that some areas of the foot may be more uncomfortable than others and this can indicate and imbalance in the corresponding body area.

In the main, the treatment will be soothing and relaxing, and hopefully a very welcome break to the hectic lifestyles experienced by many of us today.

What can I expect after a treatment?

Reflexology is a 'holistic' therapy that takes into account the fact that people are different, therefore reactions to treatments are unique to each person.

Some people experience nothing more than a light, floaty, relaxed feeling and tingling feet. Others may go through a 'healing process' (in plain language, you may feel worse before you feel better).

For instance, you may experience more activity than usual from your bowel or bladder, headaches or disturbed sleep patterns. This should be considered a perfectly normal and acceptable part of your body clearing out any toxic accumulation to achiev its optimal health. Drinking plenty of water will further help to flush excess toxins away.

How can I find out more about Reflexology?

There are lots of resources on the web - one of the best is the Association of Reflexologists.

I've listed the best books that I've read, with links to Amazon.co.uk on this page.
